What is the most effective, easiest way to remove glue squeeze out?

Our lab tested six different methods. The clear winner: Wipe it up with a wet cotton cloth, using straight (vs. circular) swipes. This method removed all the glue; no sanding was required to remove residual glue. The lab techs noted that they soaked the cloth in water and wrung it out just until it stopped dripping. The water thins the glue for easier removal and raises the grain, in just three minutes! Click through to read the lab report.

Using two separate testing methods, Franklin International measured the relative changes that occur with wood framing, metal framing, drywall and drywall adhesives in four different environmental conditions. Glue and Toothpicks Save Stripped Hinge Holes
Glue and Toothpicks Save Stripped Hinge Holes

Over time, cabinet doors can become literally unhinged when their screws loosen up in stripped holes. An easy fix: place a drop of glue in each hole and stuff in a toothpick or other sliver of wood. Let dry overnight and add more glue and wood if necessary. Once the glue/wood mixture dries, drill new pilot holes if necessary, and drive the screws.

For perfect plywood edging, cut it extra-wide
For perfect plywood edging, cut it extra-wide

Despite your best efforts, solid-wood edging will slide around after you apply glue and then clamp it to the edge of a plywood shelf or panel. To make things easier on yourself, cut the edging about ?" wider than the thickness of the shelf. Then, you’ll have a little extra material top and bottom that you can rout perfectly flush using a flush-trim bit. (Don’t try to sand the edging flush – in a heartbeat you could go through the thin top veneer on most plywoods.)

Business cards as low-tech micro-adjusters

Fortunately, help is as near as your wallet. Here’s what you need to do: Set the approximate location of your fence and lock it in place. Then clamp a wood block to the side of the fence opposite the direction you want to move it a hair or two. Unlock the fence, place a business card between it and the block, re-lock, and check its position. Add more cards as necessary. For super-fine adjustments use dollar bills or scraps of paper.

Do the thread spread for even glue distribution

Flooring installers know the importance of putting down a consistent layer of adhesive or thin-set mortar, and achieve that by using notched trowels. Similarly, you can get consistent glue layers on wood surfaces by using a coarse-threaded bolt. Here’s how to make a spreader like the one in the photo.

A new role for nails in project assembly
A new role for nails in project assembly

To assemble tricky-to-clamp projects, say an oval frame or a three-sided flag box, use nails to temporarily hold workpieces in place while the glue dries. First, dry-assemble the project parts on a piece of ¾" plywood. Once you’re satisfied that everything fits, apply glue to mating surfaces and drive finishing nails ¼" or so into the plywood to hold the workpieces in position. Use painter’s tape or waxed paper to prevent the assembly from sticking to the plywood. Gently remove the nails after the glue dries.
